| JOSEPH Griggs & Co. Ltd, the timber and timber engineered products company based at Bristol Road in Gloucester, recently celebrated its 130th anniversary. The origins of the firm trace back to 1875 when Joseph Griggs, the son of a timber merchant, established his own enterprise in Loughborough. His company prospered and by the time Queen Victoria's long reign was drawing to a close, it boasted branches in Hartlepool, Hull, Manchester, London and Gloucester. During the First World War it was decided to restructure the business by concentrating its resources on one site. The 4.2 acre location on the eastern side of the Gloucester-Sharpness canal was chosen and in 1917 Joseph Griggs & Co. began operating solely from the Bristol Road address that has been its home ever since. Although being a softwood timber importer and merchant remains at its core, Griggs has expanded its activities, products and range of services - particularly in the past 25 years. |

Today, engineered timber products account for some 60% of turnover. The firm designs and manufactures engineered timber products, including timber framed houses, trussed rafters and engineered 'I' joist floor systems. These are used locally and nationally in the construction of houses, flats, nursing homes, schools, recreational and commercial buildings. Griggs is recognised as a one-stop-shop for timber, sheet and engineered timber products. In addition to its centre of excellence in design and manufacture capability, the company has a full milling facility, a Protim wood treatment plant, plus a white priming service that offers acrylic and oil based primers, along with knotting and a base coat if required.

The founder was invited to be the first Mayor of Loughborough in 1888 and served two terms. Almost a century later, by which time the company had long been established at its present location on Bristol Road, Gloucester, the Chairman was the late Sydney W. Smith, Mayor of the city from 1978/79.
